Closing Church Shares Legacy with Phillips University Legacy Foundation
In 2016, Disciples Christian Church in Newcastle, Oklahoma, closed their doors. With the desire to distribute remaining assets toward projects which had special significance to members of the church, Phillips University Legacy Foundation was selected to receive a gift of $92,000.
The Newcastle Church Board discussed the meaningful relationship between the Church and Phillips University, as well as the work of church members Ed Cravens, 1970 Phillips graduate, and Connie Speer Cravens, 1973 Phillips graduate, who were instrumental in the formation of the Legacy Foundation. Phillips University Legacy Foundation was founded in 2002 by the Alumni and Friends Association of Phillips.
The mission of the Legacy Foundation is and to follow the tradition of Phillips University by providing scholarships and opportunities to educate and develop leaders who embody Christian values in their lives, service and work.
Phillips University Legacy Foundation has provided scholarships to 154 undergraduate students who attend Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) affiliated colleges and universities, and has awarded over $1.3 million dollars in scholarships.
The 2016-2017 class has 25 Legacy Scholars (scholarship awardees), who received scholarships of up to $5,000 per year.
