Requirements to Maintain Standing

Continuing Education

Regional Policy (Updated 10.28.14) The Commission on Clergy establishes the requirements for continuing education by all clergy seeking “active clergy standing,” in the Christian Church in Oklahoma (Disciples of Christ). Realizing that ministry takes place in a rapidly changing world, the purpose of continuing education is to strengthen ministerial leadership in both familiar and challenging new ways. So that it may be genuinely helpful, “continuing education” is to be interpreted broadly.

Healthy Boundaries Training

The Commission on Clergy has established its policy for Healthy Boundaries training. In Oklahoma, clergy are required to complete a Healthy Boundaries seminar or its equivalent every three years. The purpose of this training is to equip clergy and staff to understand the importance of healthy boundaries in ministry and to critically discern the complexities of boundaries in pastoral relationships. Healthy Boundaries 101
The first phase of HB 101 training was gradually implemented across the Region over the last three years. From this point forward it will only be offered once annually. It is a prerequisite to the 201 Seminar.
Healthy Boundaries 201
The policy requires clergy to take the Healthy Boundaries 201 Seminar within 42 months (3 1/2 years) of having taken the 101 Seminar, and thereafter every three years. (See chart) Completing this training is a requirement for standing for active and retired-active clergy.

Update December 6, 2021

Healthy Boundaries 301
The Commission on Clergy approved a new policy on 12/6/2021. Clergy are required to take the Healthy Boundaries 301 seminar, offered by the Oklahoma Region, or its equivalent with 42 months (3 1/2 years) of taking Healthy Boundaries 201 and thereafter every three years.

PRAR Training

The Commission on Clergy voted in 2019 to require all active and retired-active clergy to attend a one-day Pro-Reconciliation Anti-Racism (PRAR) training session for standing. Training schedules are pending.

How Do You Know When To Meet the Deadline?

To determine when you must meet the Healthy Boundaries 301 deadline, use the date you took HB 201 and add 42 months. Anyone completing HB 201 from September 2018 – March 2019 is required to take the 301 session to meet 2023 standing requirements. If you took HB 201 in Fall/September 2019 you should enroll in a 2023 HB 301 class to meet 2024 standing requirements.
