First Regional Youth Council Event of 2018

reconcile (def)

  1. to cause (a person) to accept or be resigned to something not desired;
  2. to win over to friendliness; cause to become amicable;
  3. to compose or settle;
  4. to bring into agreement or harmony; make compatible or consistent;
  5. to reconsecrate;
  6. to restore.

The Regional Youth Council kicked off 2018 with the first of six (6) weekend events focused on the different ways people reconcile with themselves, one another, and with social systems that order living.  Chi Rho youth and adults from 11 congregations attended Reconcile 1, Feb. 24-25.  Crown Heights Christian Church opened their fellowship hall and sanctuary to the group during the day when games, singing, and simple mission projects led to worship and a message from Rev. Darryl Burton (darrylburton.org) who shared his story of being wrongfully incarcerated for twenty-four years.  His story of hope and journey with Jesus gave the group something to ponder and inspiration for their living.

Following dinner the group traveled to the Oklahoma Science Museum for the evening and overnight in the museum.  The “Star Wars” theme at the museum helped participants think about the science within the story, and it was a hyper-sized gift to have the entire museum reserved for the group.  Click here to see the photos.

Thank You . . .

Regional Youth Council: blogging through Lent

You may be wondering if the Regional Youth Council will ePublish a Lenten Devotional this year.  Well, no and yes.  RYC is taking over this blog, “Old Camp Hat”, during Lent.  Beginning on Ash Wednesday, members of RYC will publish at least two posts each Wednesday during Lent, and there could be a guest post along the way.

What is Regional Youth Council blogging about?  I selected themes that encourage a broad Lenten experience that includes: self reflection, curiosity, memory, engaging with biblical stories, and telling personal faith stories (some call it evangelism).   RYC are pondering the writing prompts listed below, but some may create a devotional theme of their own.

Ash Wednesday
“Dear God, what I most need to experience during Lent is….” and followed with God’s response.

Week 2
What memories sustain me? Or What can I learn from my regrets?

Week 3
What parable that Jesus told helps guide how you live?  Why?
  Or
What parable that Jesus told is the hardest for you to understand or practice as a life lesson?  Why?

Week 4
What music, song, or art helps you understand the way Jesus lived, and his invitation to you to follow his way? OR What does God require of you?  How are you doing with the requirements?

Week 5
Respond to Psalm 51:3  “For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.” OR
Respond to Psalm 51:10 “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.”

Week 6
For what are you most grateful during Lent?
AND For what are you least grateful during Lent?
How has writing during Lent helped you focus on your walk with Jesus and faith in God?

Holy Week
Where are you most likely to meet Jesus today? Or

New Testament stories suggest that, in his living and teaching, Jesus showed humans the character of God.  What words define the character of God for you?  Why? Or

Mark 14:32-40 – Jesus invites you to go with him to pray at Gethsemane and you are able to stay awake. For whom or what are you praying?  Write your prayer.

Regional Youth Council invites you to join the conversation.  Maybe you could blog for your congregation or use the writing prompts in your Sunday school class or at youth group.  On behalf of the Regional Youth Council:

Thank you for reading each week.

Thank you for supporting ministry with children and youth in your congregation.

Thank you for supporting the Regional Youth Council  and the Region’s program ministry with children, youth, and young adults.

We trust your journey with Jesus to Jerusalem this Lenten season will inspire and challenge you to be the person God created you to be and deepen your discipleship.

Colors of Advent

The waiting and anticipation of Advent is how Christians begin another year.  The journey to Bethlehem begins this Sunday, December 3rd.  The Regional Youth Council has created a devotional ebook for the journey of Advent and invite you to download it and read along each week.   Advent can be counter cultural when we make time to be still and silent in the midst of parties, end of year work, travel, cheer and sorrow.

As fall approaches, some of us are thinking about next year: the places we will go with our youth groups, the things we want our groups to experience and learn, and what those opportunities might cost.  The Region is doing that as well.  Visit the Families and Youth webpage to see what the Regional Youth Council and Children, Youth, and Young Adult Commission is working on for 2018.

Summer Brings VBS Fun!

Summer is always a fun time for children to enjoy the exciting activities planned at their Vacation Bible School.

FCC Guthrie hosted “Maker Fun Factory” VBS on June 12th-16th. There were 145 kids enrolled and an amazing crew of 55 adults and youth volunteered each morning to lead the week’s activities.

Children ages 4 years old through 5th grade explored Bible stories, Imagination Station, Fun Factory Snacks, games and music. On Sunday, June 18 the children led the morning worship service with the music they had learned through the week.

Also, throughout the week, there was a “Yes We Can!” Food Drive to benefit three local food banks. The children used the cans to stack and create robots, towers and rockets of all shapes and sizes and they aimed to build the tallest towers for their group. The food will be shared with “God’s Food Bank,” “Hands of Jesus” and the “Guthrie High School Food Pantry.”

On July 16th, the church will host “Back to the Fun Factory” as a community outreach and invite everyone to the Beacon Drive-In Theater to watch “Cars 3” and enjoy a hot dog cookout. Tickets for the Drive-In Theater movie were given out to VBS attendees and may be picked up at the church or during the July 16th worship service.

Chi Rho Camp Begins the Summer Camp Season

I am the vine, you are the branches. (John 15:5a)

The Region’s Summer Camp Season began last week with Chi Rho Camp.  Rev. Tom Stanley (First Christian in Cherokee) and Rev. Cassie Sexton-Riggs (First Christian in Tulsa) co-directed the week with a talented staff of counselors and 80 junior high students.   Click here to see a few photos.  More photos later in the summer.

Our Summer Camp program would not happen without the support of our congregations and the 80 adult volunteers that are giving their time, and making their life experience and faith experience available to campers in grades 2-12.   NEW THIS SUMMER – Grand Camp (July 18-20).  This short camp is designed for grandparents of all ages and grandchildren in grades k-8th.    It will be held at Camp Christian in Northeast Oklahoma.  Contact Rev. Michael Davison for more details.

Our summer camp program runs during the month of June and Grand Camp in July.  Mixed into the camp season many youth groups will participate in mission trips, special youth group activities, local service projects, Vacation Bible School, and maybe even General Assembly (July 8-12).  So, summer isn’t a slow season for ministry with children and youth.

Visit the Families and Youth webpage to connect to all the activities this summer and the rest of this year.  Do you subscribe to the Children, Youth, and Adults Intersection?  This is one way to stay informed with this mission ministry we share.
