Join Western Oaks Christian Church for “Soup for the Soul” 2019 Lenten Series

Around 8 years ago Rev. Daniel U’Ren, Senior Minister at Western Oaks Christian Church started hosting a Lenten series called “Soup for the Soul”. In the past Western Oaks has done studies on Hospitality, Community, Justice, and Love Thy Neighbor. This year, given the growing feeling of being fragmented and divided in the country and the world, the topic is “Shalom”.

This year Western Oaks is happy to welcome Rabbi Abby Jacobson, Dr. John Starkey, Sen. Rev. Dr. George Young, and Dr. Imam Imad Enchassi as guest speakers.

Oct. 26 – 27: Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) Workshop at Western Oaks Christian Church

Western Oaks Christian Church (8100 NW 23rd, Oklahoma City, OK) is hosting a two day ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) workshop on
Friday, October 26 & Saturday, October 27, 2018 designed to prepare participants to perform suicide intervention (from recognizing warning signs all the way through safety planning).

The goal of this training is to equip members of our communities with real time skills to recognize, directly ask, and skillfully intervene and assist people, who are having suicidal thoughts and/or plans, to find a “turning point” whereby reason for living is seen, acknowledged, and a plan of safety developed.

It is not a treatment plan or a form of counseling, rather it is an evidence-based model that anyone can use to reduce suicidality and start the conversation toward safety.

Friday October 26: Register 4:30pm / Training 5:00pm – 9:00pm
Saturday October 27: Check-in 8:30am / Training 9:00am – 4:00pm

The tuition is $60 (cost of materials). Some scholarships are available. CEUs are available.

We invite and encourage other churches / organizations throughout the Region to host a two day ASIST workshop or minimally a safeTALK workshop (this half-day training is designed to alleviate the taboo of speaking about suicide; to recognize, directly ask, and refer people with suicidal thoughts to intervention resources).

Contact Cecilia Tolley at 405.513.1334 for further information, registration, or workshop planning.

Soup for the Soul

You are invited to Soup for the Soul, an ecumenical Lenten dinner and discussion held annually at Western Oaks Christian Church.

This year’s theme is focused on the scripture Micah 6:8 with an emphasis on “Justice”. What does it mean to seek justice and how does loving kindness and walking humbly with God influence that pursuit of justice? Western Oaks Christian Church brings in various guest speakers from the area to present their own perspective on a particular topic.

Speakers include Rabbi Vered Harris, Rev. Lori Walke, Dr. John Starkey and Rev. Dr. George Young. We hope that you will join Soup for the Soul, for a bowl of soup and an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue on Sundays Feb. 25-March 18th at 6:00pm.

For more information about this event and to read more about the speakers. Click Soup for the Soul 2018.

Soup for the Soul Lenten Series at Western Oaks Christian Church

Each Lent I put together a program called “Soup for the Soul” and as you might guess we gather for some good hot soup and then engage in a discussion. I bring in a different guest speaker each week to talk on the same topic that has been selected as the theme for Lent. This year Western Oaks Christian Church will take a closer look at the passages of “Love your neighbor” and the question asked of this “who is our neighbor?” To lead the discussions we have invited our neighbors to come and talk to us about how we can better love our neighbors and their views on these passages found in the gospels as well as Leviticus.

The series this year will begin on March 19th with Dr. Imam Imad Enchassi leading the discussion. Please check out the attached flyer Soup for the Soul 2017 for details.

Please rsvp to the church office (405) 789-8812 if you plan to attend.

Thank you and Shalom,
Daniel
