Camp Directors and Counselors
This Saturday, April 16, at New Covenant Christian Church our Camp Directors and Counselors will gather for a training event.  The day includes: group building, review of the Region’s policies and procedures for Outdoor Ministry, curriculum overview, best practices, and idea sharing from the experience that our adult volunteers bring to camp.  It takes at least 100 adult volunteers each summer to staff the variety of camp experiences the Region offers.  Some camp directors are still recruiting counselors.  Email Michael if you could volunteer.  The Summer Camp team of the Commission for Children, Youth, and Young Adult Ministries has oversight for the Region’s Outdoor Ministry program.

RYC App

No, not an App that you get from your favorite online store, but the application we use for those interested in serving on the Regional Youth Council.  Each winter the RYC opens an application process for youth that are rising juniors or seniors who would give their skills to serve the Region’s youth, and are interested in becoming better leaders.  RYC is made up of youth and adults.  Currently, there are 24 youth and adults serving on RYC.

You can download the RYC Application using this link.  If you are an adult interested in serving on RYC, please contact Rev. Michael Davison.

Pam’s Peace

I never answer the phone at the Regional Office, but one evening back in December, when the phone rang, I answered.  “Rev. Holt,” the woman said, “my name is Julia from Global Ministries.  I’d like to extend an invitation to you to join a delegation of Regional Ministers from the Disciples of Christ and the United Church of Christ to travel to the Middle East.” As she took a breath, I said, “Me?”  “Yes, ma’am!  We’d really like for you to go.”  After gaining further clarity, I finally asked how I should budget for this trip.  She said, “Global Ministries will take care of you.”  I hung up, shocked.  I made three phone calls:  to the Regional Minister of Kansas, to the Moderator of the Region of Oklahoma, and to my husband.

I am very excited to tell you that on February 28th, I will join a delegation of twenty-one pastoral leaders from the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ who will travel to Cairo, Egypt; Beirut, Lebanon; Amman, Jordan; and Jerusalem under the leadership of Dr. Peter Makari, Ph.D., Executive, Middle East and Europe Global Ministries. We are scheduled to return on March 11th.  I will keep a journal and take plenty of pictures to share with you upon our return.  Please pray for us as we represent you to our partners in ministry in the Middle East.

Delegates from DOC:  GM&P, Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins; Regional Ministers Paxton Jones (KS); Pamela Holt (OK); Rick Speth (IN); Denise Bell (GA); Susan Gonzales Dewey (PSW); Thaddeus Allen (WV).
Delegates from UCC:  GM&P, Rev. Dr. John Dorhauer; Conference Ministers James Antal (MA); John Deckenback (Atlantic); Edward Davis (Southern); Campbell Lovett (MI); Rich Pleva (IA); Franz Rigert (WI); Kent Siladi (CT); Tulani Ndlanzi (S Africa); Ms. Fikile Roseline Mcopela (S Africa); David Armour (Canada); Traci Blackmon (Ex. Minister, Justice & Witness).
Delegates from Global Ministries:  Rev. Marco Cable (Africa), Dr. Peter Makari (Middle East).

Remember your “quilt square” project for Regional Assembly: Festival of Missions! in Tulsa.  April 29-30, 2016.

Summer Camp Registration Opens

FearlessFaithWhat happens at a church camp or weekend retreat?  Great question.  A camp or retreat experience is a blend of play, study, worship, service, and prayer.  Each day participants live through these elements that help a young person discover God, deepen their faith commitment, and put their discipleship as a follower of Jesus into practice.  Camp Directors are beginning to recruit counselors for this summer’s exciting weeks of camp.  During June the Region offers church camp experiences for children and youth in grades 2-12 and this year we have 2 new camps.

Heifer Week is designed for youth completing grades 7-10.  This week is limited to 20 youth who, with 5 adults, will spend a week at the Heifer Ranch in Perryville, AR learning about how other cultures live, eat, and interact with first world nations.  It will be an eye opening and challenging week, June 5-10.

Kairos Camp is designed for youth in grades 4-8 and is hosted at Camp Christian near Chouteau.  This will be a traditional residential camp experience with small groups, games, crafts, keynotes, and worship and all the elements mentioned above.

Between February 8 and April 16 the Region offers discount rates, and between April 17-May 15 the regular camp rates apply.  If you are a member of a congregation in the Central Area or the Northwest Area your camper is eligible for a further discount through a grant from the Leave No Child Behind fund that is sponsored by Disciples’ Men in those areas.  You will find those rates when you register.

If you have questions during the registration process give Rev. Michael Davison a call or text.

Da da, da doo, ah, bah, bah, bah, bah, bah, boo. Summer!

“A lot of people like snow. I find it to be an unnecessary freezing of water.” (Carl Reiner)

As quickly as the new year has entered our lives, so too winter.  But, not far off in the distance past the sneezing and storms of spring, out there beyond the perimeter of Easter and Pentecost is summer.  Da da, da doo, ah, bah, bah, bah, bah, bah, boo.  Summer!

June and July are the months that Disciples trek into the wilderness.  It is ground here in Oklahoma, and in every Region, that is made holy, named holy, because intentional Christian community is put into practice differently than in our home towns and cities.  We call it church camp.  This year the Region offers a variety of camp experiences for children and youth in grades 2-12.  The Summer Ministry team hopes every week offered is sold out.  The Summer Ministry team encourages every congregation to participate by:

  • Sending campers;
  • Praying for campers, counselors, and directors;
  • Supporting the adults from your congregation that volunteer as counselors and directors;
  • Offering to pay some or all of the cost of the camp fees for your campers;
  • Supporting the Region’s Outdoor Ministry with financial gifts even if you don’t send campers.

The Camp Registration Guidebook is available on our website.  Download it to learn more about registering for camp.  Contact me if you have questions about registering or supporting this shared ministry of the Christian Church in Oklahoma.

This summer campers, counselors, and directors will explore a ‘Fearless Faith.”  Registration opens February 8.

Advent Around the Corner

How will you prepare, wait, and journey to Bethlehem this year? What kind of messiah are you expecting to meet at the manger? What messiah are your searching for?  Sometimes we know a few of the biblical stories so well, like the Christmas and Easter stories, that we embellish portions or skip over portions. This year, read closely and spend some time with the stories. Note what is not part of the biblical story, but is a layer of tradition’s story about the biblical story.

The Regional Youth Council has created an Advent Devotional book.  Some members of RYC have written on the traditional Advent themes: hope, peace, joy, and love.  This is an eBook for all ages.  Click here to download it.

Be well and find your center as you give thanks, and turn your attention to Advent as the story about Jesus of Nazareth begins again.

Monday Thank You Notes

Do you remember that last time you wrote, hand wrote, a “thank you” note? Getting anything that is hand written these days is something to marvel. I can remember sending and receiving hand written letters a long, long time ago. The Internet has made it easier to say “Happy Birthday,” “Happy Anniversary,” or just “Thinking of You,” as it only takes a couple of minutes. It is one way that technology has changed our culture and daily lives. Social media, specifically Facebook, has become the digital bill board that makes it easy to “please and thank you” for a variety of needs, causes, and issues that are personal and corporate.

Jimmy Fallon uses the idea of writing ‘thank you notes’ as a comedy bit, and it is instructive as we begin the journey toward Thanksgiving and Advent. If you tune in on Friday nights, or watch on the Internet, you will hear him say something like, “It’s Friday and I usually catch up on some personal stuff and write thank you notes.” The first step of saying thank you is being intentional. In a world clamoring for your attention, making time to type a few words on a person’s Facebook page, or to write a note and put it in the mail, that is time you chose to make that person the center of your attention. Hand written notes require more time, more thought, and more concentration as most of us don’t hand write much of anything anymore and many, maybe like me, might be self conscious about their handwriting. How well or how often do you make another person the center of your attention when you don’t need anything from them?

So, this November and December I’m making a change to my weekly routine. I’m adding 30 minutes to my Monday for handwritten thank you notes. Simple and overdue words of appreciation for persons that have helped me through life, allowed me to walk along their journey in faith, or asked me big questions that challenge my worldview.  And now, one of the big questions I was asked : Is Jesus of Nazareth worth following without knowing the Easter story?

I beg your indulgence to offer a few digital “Thank You Notes” in this space.

  • Thank You, to the 90 adults that gave their time, their life experience, and their faith experience as Summer Camp Counselors and Summer Camp Directors this year.
  • Thank You, parents, grandparents, and guardians that trust your congregation and the Region to teach the language of faith and the practice of Christianity to your children and youth.
  • Thank You, to the Commission with Children, Youth, and Young Adult for your service, ideas, and energy for this missional ministry.
  • Thank You, Regional Youth Council for your willingness to be community, and create opportunities for community for youth and youth workers in our Region.
  • Thank You, to the adults that were sponsors for the International Affairs Seminar and Chi Rho Heifer Spring Break Trip this year.
  • Thank You, First Christian Church in Cherokee for your financial gift that funded the site fee for the adults volunteering at Chi Rho Camp this summer.
  • Thank You, Disciples Men’s Fellowship for your organizing and fundraising for the Leave No Child Behind Fund.
  • Thank You, First Christian Church in Stillwater for hosting CYF Koinonia this year.
  • Thank you, to the individuals that supported their congregations and the covenant we call the Christian Church in Oklahoma through the years with their time, ideas, talent, and with your financial gifts.

Be a blessing Disciples.
