Caminante Mission Complete!

The recent Caminante mission trip to Boca Chica, Dominican Republic was a safe and blessed journey. A special thank you to Bret Carter, Molly Carter, Madison Rubino, and Cecelia Tolley for traveling to serve others in the Dominican Republic. They worked with the children in the Caminante homework rooms and brought much needed resources to them. Most importantly, they showed them the love of Jesus with their kindness and sharing their time.

Madison Rubino, a Spanish teacher, blessed the trip by sharing her gift of language. Her gift quickly removes the language barrier, and provides an instant connection with the children. We give thanks for Bret, Molly, Madison, and Cecelia, choosing to share their individual gifts and talents with the Oklahoma Region, as well as with the children of Caminante.

We would also like to thank Rev. Don Johnson, Shauna Becker, and Beverly Rubino for their tireless fundraising work to fund this trip. We are so thankful for all of those that supported this Caminante mission trip, both in prayer and financially.

We thank the Lord for providing the resources to continue this worthy ministry. Oklahoma Disciples Foundation, Faith in Action Commission, and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Oklahoma provided generous grants and scholarships. Caminante also received many gifts from churches and individuals, which provided scholarships and money for teacher supplies. Without sharing the gifts, talents and money of those in our congregations and community, these trips would not be possible.

How A Generator Changed a Puerto Rican Church: A Powerful Story by Rev. Miguel Morales

When Hurricane Harvey hit Houston in 2017, we asked ourselves, “What happens to a pastor and their family when a natural disaster devastates their community, their church, and/or the pastor’s home? How do we as Pension Fund, specifically Ministerial Relief and Assistance, stand with our pastors in these moments of vulnerability when their own financial security is threatened and they are trying to balance the needs of their family, their church, and their community?”

Discerning the answers to these questions led directly to an expansion of Ministerial Relief and Assistance, including a permanent partnership with Week of Compassion to provide grants to pastors affected by natural disasters.

Last week at the biennial General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), hundreds of our members and friends heard from Rev. Miguel Morales, General Pastor of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Puerto Rico as he shared his harrowing story of the moments during and directly following Hurricane Maria. Rev. Morales’ presentation included a powerful video describing how, through the generosity of our donors, Pension Fund was able to act quickly and effectively despite incredible logistical challenges.

The programs of Ministerial Relief and Assistance, such as these, are funded by generous donors and the MRA Endowment. If you are interested in learning more about MRA programs or how to become a donor, click here.

With gratitude,

Rev. Dr. Todd A. Adams
President and CEO

Worship Planning Retreat in OKC: August 18-21, 2019

Dr. Marcia McFee, is the Creator and Visionary of an online worship resource called the Worship Design Studio. She will host a worship planning retreat August 18-21, 2019 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City. She takes participants on an immersive learning experience about the liturgical year and helps pastors and worship teams develop an intentional model for designing meaningful and memorable worship experiences. Register Here

Schedule and Agenda:
Sunday evening: THE CREATIVE PROCESS AND THE LITURGICAL YEAR – We’ll lay the groundwork with a look at planning seasonally, team processes, timelines and how to get the most out of your time at this planning retreat.

Monday morning: THE ADVENT/CHRISTMAS/EPIPHANY CYCLE – Make plans to start the liturgical year off with deeply meaningful worship that has people talking about “the best Advent season ever.”

Monday afternoon: THE LENTEN SEASON – This session offers glimpses into the possible depths worship leaders can offer congregations in this poignant season of personal and communal transformation. We will highlight the power of symbols and spiritual practices that flow easily between worship and home, connecting what we do in worship to our daily lives.

Monday night: HOLY WEEK – This will be a one-of-a-kind experience in which the theology of Holy Week will mesh with the message of the Oklahoma City bombing Memorial site–a stunning setting to experience music, poetry, ritual action, and reflection on our commitment to create a more peaceful world.

Tuesday morning: FREE TIME – After four packed sessions, participants will be ready to sleep in, catch up, or perhaps just use the time continuing to plan.

Tuesday afternoon: EASTER CYCLE AND THE DAY OF PENTECOST – This session focuses on ways to enhance festival worship and deepen our practices of communion throughout the year.

Tuesday evening: THE SUNDAYS AFTER PENTECOST – We’ll look at how to manage and plan for this long season, making “ordinary time” extraordinary! The goal here is to spark many, many ideas that pastors and teams can easily develop for the second half of the year.

Wednesday morning: CONTINUING THE PROCESS – Now that participants will have the broad brush strokes planned for the year, this session will help them know what to do when they go home, how to keep the creativity flowing, manage teamwork, and how to get to the nitty-gritty of planning details without falling back into a last-minute rut.

Contact Marcia McFee, Ph.D. with questions. [email protected]
