A Word about Ministry Following the Supreme Court’s Decision on Marriage

Much has been and will continue to be said among faithful Disciples regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage equality on Friday, June 26.  For some, it is a cause for joy and relief.  Others consider it a blow to their understanding of biblical faith.  Given the church we are, both opinions are going to continue to live side by side for a while.

Regardless of one’s reaction, there seems to be some confusion on what the ruling means for clergy.  The Supreme Court’s decision relates to the legal contract of marriage, which differs from a religious understanding of marriage, and should be read alongside the First Amendment.  The ruling did not change the religious freedom guaranteed under that Amendment.  Clergy will continue to have the right – as they always have – to perform marriages according to their own good consciences.  Counties will issue marriage licenses to couples regardless of gender; ministers will decide which ceremonies to perform.

Through it all, we continue to lift prayers of gratitude to God, who calls us to love each other and to be a community of faith that seeks to welcome all to the Table of God’s Grace.

(Kingston) This week CYF youth from Sulphur, Cyril and Ardmore are creating intentional community at Texoma Christian Camp.  Please keep all the adults and campers in your prayers this week.

The Region's Summer Camp season ended on June 26 when CYF Conference closed the season with worship.  Our thanks to all the adults that gave their time this summer: our directors and counselors, those that drove campers to and from camp, those that participated in fundraising and supported paying a portion of the camp fees, and the onsite staff at the facilities we use to host our camps (Camp Christian, Central Oklahoma Christian Camp, and Oakridge Camp).
There are opportunities through our partnerships for youth and adults to experience outdoor ministry in July!

Clergy Training Opportunity - Local Disaster Spiritual Care Responder
Local clergy are invited to become trained and credentialed as Local Spiritual Care Responders through the Oklahoma Conference of Churches (OCC). This is OCC's on-going response to long-term spiritual and emotional care needs. The training prepares leaders for disasters in their area. It is especially applicable in light of this spring's storms. The next training session is in the OKC Metro area July 23. Click here to download more information about the workshop and how to register.
